Old State House now residence of Prime Minister

THE old State House in Robert Mugabe Avenue has become the official residence of Prime Minster Nahas Angula, Cabinet has resolved.

The big estate with a large garden and a swimming pool, which dates back to the German colonial era, will also accommodate offices of all staff working in the Office of the Prime Minister, which currently operate from various offices all over Windhoek. It is not yet known when Angula will make the move.
Cabinet made this decision on July 20, the latest press statement on Cabinet resolutions said.
‘In May this year Cabinet directed the Ministry of Works to submit a memorandum on the future of the old State House,’ the statement said.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba has moved to the presidential residence at the new State House, which was completed in May.
‘The Minister of Works informed Cabinet that staff of the OPM is accommodated in several buildings in Windhoek. There is a need to accommodate a significant number of them under one roof for improved co-ordination and functioning,’ Works Minister Erkki Nghimtina explained to Cabinet.
‘While it is true that many Government institutions function under similar conditions, the Office of the Prime Minister should receive priority treatment.’
‘Therefore, Cabinet was approached by that ministry to allocate the old State House as office to the Prime Minister and [as] the official residence of the Prime Minister,’ the Works Minister added.
When former President Sam Nujoma still lived at the old State House he kept several rabbits, exotic chickens, pheasants, guinea fowls and tortoises on the premises, which often delighted visiting heads of state and reporters waiting for official events to start.
