Naka, a local candle making entrepreneur has teamed up with the Cancer Association of Namibia to work on the ‘Oh My Tits!’ candle collection, in support of breast cancer month which is observed every October.
The collection features uniquely shaped scented candles and aims to create awareness of the importance of women performing self-examinations regularly.
Ester Ashilungu says she initially did a research project on breast cancer for a science fair, and after understanding the mobility of breast cancer, became passionate about spreading awareness and educating people about breast cancer.
“This is also why we are raising funds for the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN), to help them raise awareness in disadvantaged communities around Namibia, especially those who don’t have access to the internet.
“Each candle is handmade and therefore truly unique, as we tried to include all women. So, you’ll find that some boobs are bigger, some are saggy, some are bigger than the other, some had a mastectomy but didn’t lose the entire breast,” says Ashilungu.
The candles are 100% natural, made of soy wax mixed with fragrant oils that are animal testing-free.
The candles are featured in three different designs and skin tones, to represent the diversity of women’s breasts.
The coco candle symbolises those who have had a double mastectomy, while the caramel candle signifies hope, for the person who still has both breasts. The rich cream candle celebrates bravery and is symbolised as the person with a single mastectomy.
“We partnered up with a local potter to create handmade candle jars for our limited-edition candles. With education being one of the key cornerstones of cancer prevention, we hope to raise awareness and educate women especially about the early signs of breast cancer, which is a crucial determinant of the outcome,” she says.
The target is to sell 150 candles, and 10% of the proceeds from the sale of each candle will be donated to CAN to aid in cancer prevention.
