Nored promises Kavango West uninterrupted power supply

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (Nored) has promised residents of the Kavango West region of uninterrupted power supply.

This is after the residents of the region, especially those of the regional capital, Nkurenkuru, raised concerns about the continuous power outages the region has been experiencing.

At a stakeholders’ meeting held at Nkurenkuru two weeks ago, the residents complained that the frequent power outages are affecting their daily lives.

Businesses, schools and hospitals have also been affected by the power outages.

Responding to the residents’ concerns on Thursday, Nored’s manager for technical services Petnen Frans said the company has come up with three strategic plans to solve the power outages in the region.

“The first one is a long-term strategic intervention and that was a critical issue of a dedicated line, dedicated station to supply electricity to the regional capital Nkurenkuru,” said Frans.

He said the company has also embarked on a study to look at ways of providing power to the region from Okongo, Ohangwena region.

Frans stressed that the company has mobilised a team to ensure a stable power supply to the region, minimise power interruptions and the maintenance of streetlights, which have been off for some time, leaving the residents in the dark.

At the previous meeting, the residents also called on NamPower to introduce a second supply line to Kavango West and a dedicated powerline for Nkurenkuru.

They also indicated the need for a second powerline to the region, to be installed as a matter of urgency.

At the moment, Nkurenkuru is being supplied from a rural electrification line, unlike all urban areas, which causes frequent power outages in the town.

Presently, the two Kavango regions are being supplied by the Otjikoto-Masivi line from Tsumeb to Rundu.
