NHE hands over 64 houses at Ondangwa

THE National Housing Enterprise (NHE) on Thursday handed over 64 houses at Ondangwa that were constructed at a cost of N$20 million.

Minister of urban and rural development Erastus Uutoni said housing continues to be one of the country’s key national development priorities as it is an important vehicle for addressing poverty and inequality, as well as bringing about social harmony, economic advancement and ensuring political stability.

Uutoni made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf at Ondangwa, saying the handover is a reaffirmation of the shared recognition and resolve that all citizens have a right to decent and affordable housing and shelter.

“While inadequate and unequal access to housing and urban land is a challenge, it can however also be turned into an opportunity and to galvanise unity of purpose and collective action and joint investment by government, the private sector and the community,” he said.

He added that national developmental challenges and goals such as housing and urban land delivery can be addressed through concerted efforts from both the public and other sectors of the society, as demonstrated by this project.

Chairperson of the NHE board Toska Sem said that the NHE is also constructing 52 houses at Okakarara, while 34 housing units are being developed at Mariental – both are expected to be completed in June this year.

Sem also said the enterprise is awaiting the approval of building plans for 50 houses at Oshakati and 40 at Keetmanshoop, both expected to commence before the end of March 2025. This is in addition to 171 houses under construction at Nkurenkuru and a 546 housing units being developed at Katima Mulilo.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Lucia Heita extended their heartfelt appreciation to NHE, saying it has not only provided exceptional real estate services but also helped countless families and individuals find their dreams.
