The app business is booming these days, because there’s beauty in having an app around to access whatever you need at the touch of a button.
This invention has given apps such as Twitter, Snapchat and Uber value which has shot up to billions of dollars. And Namibians are getting on board the app train too. From PayToday to Piggiback, there are more apps available for download than you may think. Now, we’ve got two more apps on our spotlight radar – BraaiTime and Intercity.
Intercity
Last week, we touched on a couple of transportation apps that people were using to get from point A to B. If you haven’t heard by now, a latest release is called Intercity. Described as a “locally designed mobile application that provides a safe and secure platform to connect different drivers with users who need transportation or those who need their merchandise transported”, it is not only limited to Windhoek, but extends to towns such as Walvis Bay.
The process is easy to work around – all you have to do is set your departure and arrival points, figure out who you’re driving with (which includes the type of car and number plate) and book your seat. Also, it’s not only limited to you. You can send parcels with the driver and track them – so you’ll know exactly who your important documents are with. The phone number of the driver will also be available, so you can call if you’re ever in doubt
According to one of three founders Herobiam Heita, “the Intercity story started a long time ago when the 21st century started demanding a fast paced flexible way of life for the average middle class citizen which our transport system could not support”.
A lot of people are still relying on minibuses to take them to their destinations and usually this involves hours of waiting and lost luggage. But Intercity eliminates the waiting period and offers an alternative transportation service for you.
Co-founder Eben Haihambo said that the costs rely on the driver. “The app just facilitates the discussion and it doesn’t take a fee,” he said. “The driver set their own prices and then passengers can choose rides based on date, time, vehicle type, seats available or price.” And a trip to Walvis Bay from Windhoek, for example, could range from anything between N$100 to N$350.
The app is available on Google Playstore, but expect it to appear on the Apple store and online soon.
Ever thought it was a hassle to go to the butchery across town and get your meat fix? Now, you can order delicious meat from the comfort of your home. Introducing BraaiTime – a new app which brings the butchery closer to you.
Here’s how it works: After creating an account or logging in with your Facebook profile (where you are required to have an email), you’re ready to go. According to the app, the drop off location is usually at the Klein Windhoek Shell Service Station every second Sunday between 19h00 and 20h00.
Select either lamb, beef, springbok, hartebeest, kudu or oryx. Currently, only lamb is available, but as you check your app, the products will update. Also, some products are offered according to the season, but it’s possible to order on request.
After you’re done, figure out what kind of grade you’re looking for – A-grade, AB-grade or B-grade meat and even go as far as select the weight of your product. Once you’re done selecting your quantity, you can choose how you want your items to be packaged. The more you play around with your grading and packaging, you can see just how much it will cost. From there, you can simply add it to your cart and you’re good to go!
