New Era appoints Helvi Shaanika as managing editor

The New Era Publication Corporation has appointed Helvi Shaanika as the managing editor of the state-owned newspaper.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday in an email sent to staff by human resource manager Hilaria Werner.

“Helvi Shaanika has been appointed as the managing editor, and Lahja Nashuuta is the acting deputy editor and head of the Ongwediva office,” Werner writes.

“In addition, Charles Tjatindi has been assigned new responsibilities focusing on mentorship and coaching. His valuable experience will play a vital role in supporting and nurturing new talent within the newsroom,” she adds.

The Namibian has been informed that Shaanika, who currently serves as deputy editor and head of the Ongwediva office, has been a journalist with New Era for about 16 years.

New Era has not had a substantive managing editor since Johnathan Beukes, who served in the role for four years, left the newspaper in October last year.

Beukes was suspended in October 2023 after New Era published a series of articles questioning the transparency of the judiciary in appointing judges.

Tjatindi has been acting in that position since late last year.
