Jason Naule lost his WBA Pan African Junior Welterweight title when South Africa’s Kaizer Mabuza beat him on a 10th round TKO in the early hours of Friday morning.
Naule’s trainer Nestor Tobias threw in the towel, 1 minute 33 seconds into the 11th round as Mabuza pummelled away at Naule with strong combinations to head and body. Mabuza dominated the fight from the start, and was well ahead on points when the end came.Mabuza’s corner was ectstatic, carrying their new champion around, while Naule was utterly dejected in his corner, as Tobias and The Hitman Moses tried to console him.”I had to protect my fighter. He was getting a beating and I didn’t want him to get hurt unnecessarily,” Tobias told Namibia Sport after the fight.”Jason has been suffering from some personal problems so I will sit down and talk to him and try and sort it out.But he will be back,” Tobias added. It was Naule’s first defeat after 13 professional fights, while Mabuza now has a record of 19 wins, three defeats and one draw from 23 fights.Mabuza took the fight to Naule from the start picking up points with his sharp combinations to Naule’s body.Naule was content to cover up and managed to land some quick counterattacks of his own.By the third round Naule picked up the pace and landed some effective jabs, but Mabuza wasn’t deterred and continued to attack Naule’s body.Mabuza landed a sharp left hook to Naule’s head in the fifth round, but Naule fought back with counter attacks to Mabuza’s body. The fight swung Mabuza’s way in the sixth round when he stunned Naule with powerful hooks to the head and body.Naule tried to retaliate with a quick counterattack, but his punches lacked power.By the ninth round Naule tried to pick up the pace, leading with his jab, but Mabuza answered with some strong uppercuts and it was clear that Naule was in trouble. When Mabuza caught Naule in a corner with a flurry of blows, Tobias decided that his boxer had had enough and threw in the towel.NAM BOXERS DOMINATE FIGHTS It was a disappointing end for the close to 1 000 Namibian fans who had come to celebrate Namibia’s 18th Independence anniversary at the Telecom Independence Day Boxing Tournament. But although Naule lost his African title, there was a lot to savour as all Namibia’s boxers on the undercard won their bouts against South African and Zimbabwean opponents. In the main supporting bout, Namibia’s super middleweight champion Vikapita Meroro beat Zimbabwe’s Chamunorua Gonorenda on points over six rounds.Gonorenda was a tough opponent and took the fight to Meroro. He landed some sharp jabs, but Meroro countered with strong blows to the head and body.By the fifth round both boxers were tired and hung on a lot, but Meroro finished stronger, landing some heavy shots in the sixth round. The other results were as follows: Junior welterweight: Tommy Hango (Namibia) beat Modecai Donga (Zimbabwe) on points over six rounds.Junior lightweight: Tommy Nakashimba (Namibia) beat Wandile Masekleku (South Africa) on points over four rounds.Flyweight: Simon Negodhi (Namibia) beat Klaas Mboyane (South Africa) on points over four rounds.Junior lightweight: Gottlieb Ndokosho (Namibia) beat Lebo Mboniswa (South Africa) on points over four rounds.Lightweight: Jatoorora Tjingavete (Namibia) beat Ali Phiri (Zimbabwe) on points over four rounds.Junior flyweight: Abmerk Shidjuu (Namibia) beat Sibusiso Nqacati (South Africa) on points over four rounds.Junior lightweight: Abraham Ndaendapo (Namibia) beat Peter Malakia (Namibia) on points over four rounds.Namibia SportMabuza dominated the fight from the start, and was well ahead on points when the end came.Mabuza’s corner was ectstatic, carrying their new champion around, while Naule was utterly dejected in his corner, as Tobias and The Hitman Moses tried to console him.”I had to protect my fighter. When Mabuza caught Naule in a corner with a flurry of blows, Tobias decided that his boxer had had enough and threw in the towel.
