Vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on Namibians to take up opportunities in the mining industry.
Speaking during the Mining Expo and Conference in Windhoek on Wednesday, she said the industry is a big economic contributor to the country and can help address unemployment.
The vice president said pupils must make sure they choose the right careers in line with upcoming industries.
“We as the government are aware that graduates are currently on the street, but for those in school right now it will be easier,” she said.
She said a local value addition policy is urgent.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said although the industry has made efforts in local procurement, more can be done.
“The industry currently allocates 60% to 80% of its procurement to local suppliers,” she said.
The expo will run from 7 to 9 August under the theme ‘Green Shoots for Namibia’s Mining Industry’.
