SIX pupils from Namib High School at Swakopmund are going to Germany in August for a 12-day climate workshop at the High School Sulingen.
The two schools have been cooperating since 2014, supported by the ‘Sonnenkinderprojekt’, with the objective to educate pupils on climate protection and related issues.
“The young participants will intensify their ecological awareness and develop a sense of mission as climate scouts, and that is to share their knowledge with others and spread the idea of climate protection,” said Sonnenkinderprojekt’s Ulrike Knief in a media statement.
Last year the German participants travelled to Namibia for a unique experience, and this year they will welcome their Namibian counterparts with an exciting programme.
Knief said that apart from the normal school life in which the Namibians will participate, they will visit climate-related sites such as the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven, the Moorwelten in Ströhen, and the water utility in Sulingen. They will also get to know the country’s wildlife and do practical experiments.
Following the 12-day trip, the pupils are expected to prepare a variety of educational materials, such as films, booklets, etc., which can be shared with other pupils at their schools, as well as other schools in both countries. “Thus the climate scouts are not only learning for themselves but also their role as young ambassadors of climate issues,” said Knief. The Namibians will live with guest families in and around Sulingen to be integrated into daily German life.
