Namibia wins women’s triangular cricket tourney

WINDHOEK – Namibia’s senior women’s cricket team won the first-ever Triangular Women’s Cricket tournament after beating Botswana in the final on Tuesday.

The matches were played at the Trustco United Sports Field in Olympia from Friday to Tuesday.

Namibia’s senior team beat a Namibian invitational team, made up of under-19 players, and the Botswana national team, while Botswana also beat the invitational team but lost against the Namibian senior team.

In the final, Botswana batted first and scored 126 runs after 40 overs, with the loss of three wickets before breaking for lunch.

After the lunch break, Namibia batted and scored 130 runs after 29 overs with the loss of four wickets to be crowned the winners of the tournament.

Organisers said the tournament will take place again next year in order to improve women’s cricket in the country.

“Women’s cricket is on the rise and come next year, we will host the tournament again but we want to turn it into a four nations event. We want to give our girls a fair share of competition and improve the quality of women’s cricket in the country,” said Hester Khan, the chairperson of Namibian Women’s Cricket.

“If you look at the triangular tournament, the quality of cricket played was good but it can still be improved if we invite two more nations like Zambia, Zimbabwe or Mozambique to come compete with us at home,” she added.

At the end of the triangular tournament, Namibia’s Petro Enright was selected player of the tournament and her teammate Anneri van Schoor batsman of the tournament.

Mimmie Ramafifi of Botswana was crowned best bowler, and her compatriot Shameelah Moswell, walked away with best fielder of the tournament award. – Nampa
