Namibia finished third at the Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala, Uganda after beating Kenya 38-27 in the bronze medal match on Sunday.
Namibia, who led 26-5 at half time, scored four tries, while Denzo Bruwer added 18 points with the boot through three conversions and four penalties.
Kenya took the lead Namibia when right wing Beldad Ogeta went over after a backline attack, but with Namibia’s forwards gaining the ascendancy in the setpieces, they gradually started to take control.
Bruwer opened their account with a penalty on 13 minutes, while two more penalties put them 9-5 ahead after 23 minutes.
Rightwing Quirione Majiedt scored their first try after being put clear by Peter Diergaardt, while Lloyd Jacobs scored a fine solo try after breaking through three tackles. Bruwer added both conversions and a penalty to put Namibia 26-5 ahead at the halftime break.
Kenya came storming back in the second half when lock Thomas Ongera crashed over for a try and with fullback Barry Young adding the conversion and a penalty they reduced the deficit to 26-15.
Namibian wing Nandi Karuuombe turned on the pace to go over after a counter-attack by fullback JC Nel, but Kenya once again struck back when substitute forward Ephraim Oduwo crashed over for a converted try to make the score 33-22.
Namibia stretched their lead to 38-22 when scrumhalf Jacques Theron rounded off a blindside attack from a scrum, but Kenya once again came back when substitute back Derrick Ashihundu turned on the pace to go over for an uconverted try.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile won the Africa Cup after beating Algeria 29-3 in the final. It was the first time in 12 years that Zimbabwe had won the Cup, ending Namibia’s dominance in the competition since 2012, during which time they won the cup on six occasions.
