Namibia mourns Nujoma, a feared and respected liberation leader – Uahekua Herunga

Swapo deputy secretary general Uahekua Herunga says Sam Nujoma was one of the most feared leaders of Africa’s liberation movements, both before and after Namibia’s independence.

Herunga was speaking to Desert FM on Sunday, shortly after Nujoma’s death was announced.

“We have lost one of the most feared sons of the soil during the liberation struggle. He was a man who inspired the young, old and middle-aged, in terms of the determination to free Namibia,” he said.

“He was a person who laid the foundation for the young and showed them that black people can lead themselves and be free. So his death is very difficult for the Swapo Party.”

Herunga, however, said Namibians will soldier on.

“He inspired us in so many ways, but we will soldier on with the legacy he left us.”

Herunga noted that despite almost 20 years since Nujoma left active politics, the Swapo Party remains stable.

“The party remains stable and continues to lead Namibia. He left a feared party. He left a leadership that he inspired. He left a very strong party, and that is why we will continue to soldier on.

“His legacy will never die in the hearts and minds of many,” he added.
