Namibia elected to Climate Adaptation Fund board

THE deputy director of multilateral environmental agreements in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Peter Muteyauli, has been elected to serve on the Climate Adaptation Fund board as an alternate member.

Muteyauli was elected by the African Group at the conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Doha, Qatar.The board of the Adaptation Fund is the highest decision-making body of the fund. The fund was established to enhance adaptation projects and programmes in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to adverse effects of climate change.Over the past two years, the Washington DC-based fund has dedicated more than US$165 million to increase resilience to climate change in 25 countries.The board, which supervises and manages the fund, consists of 16 members and 16 alternates and holds meetings throughout the year.Muteyauli is Namibia’s chief climate change negotiator. Namibia is an active party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has so far submitted two National Communications to the Bonn-based Convention.In November, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism launched the Third National Communication project, that will prepare the country’s Third National Communication to the UNFCCC.*Absalom Shigwedha is a freelance environmental journalist.
