The National Assembly of Namibia celebrated the 36th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Namibia on Monday.
Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said the Constitution remains a defining milestone in Namibia’s democratic journey.
It continues to guide the nation through the values of unity, liberty, equality, human dignity and justice, she said.
“The Namibian Constitution stands as a proud testament to our collective resolve to build a democratic, inclusive and just society,” Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.
She said the Constitution is respected internationally as one of the most progressive in the world.
The anniversary also provides an opportunity to honour both the country’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, and former president Hage Geingob.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila described their contributions to nation-building and constitutionalism as central to Namibia’s democratic foundations.
The speaker further said Namibia has recorded key achievements over the past 36 years.
This includes regular free and fair elections, the protection of human rights, peace and stability, and increased participation in democratic processes.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila called on all Namibians to live by the values of the Constitution and to honour those who have defended it, including the late control prosecutor Justine Shiweda, whom she described as a patriot and fearless defender of the law.
