THE Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) committee has finished revising its constitution and established 12 regional basketball associations successfully, its president Ndeulipula Hamutumwa said yesterday.
The federation was ordered to amend its constitution by the Namibia Sports Commission last year after it established an interim committee to run and manage the affairs of basketball in the country. In addition the committee was mandated to restructure the regional structures and then facilitate the national basketball congress to elect new leadership. The constitution was first revised in 2004 and made no reference to the growth of basketball in Namibia, like recognising the power of the regions and their subsequent custodian of insuring that basketball does take place in their respective region. The constitution lacked foresight and needed to be changed and to be aligned with the expectation of the sport act and the FIBA statutes, thus the Sports Commission advised that the constitution be reviewed to become more accommodative to the global basketball environment. In a statement to the media, Hamutumwa said the latest of the new regional branches was the Karas Basketball Association, which was established on Saturday at Keetmanshoop. The new association has Festus Shimanda as president, with Warieta Shilongo as his deputy, Vernon Otto as secretary general, Marius Kinda as treasurer and Zane Bezuidenhout as development officer. ‘The NBF committee will be conducting the final regional election (Hardap Basketball Association) on July 11 in Rehoboth,’ read Hamutumwa’s statement.’Following the successful completion of the regional structures, the committee is planning to host the national basketball congress on July 31 in Windhoek with delegates and stakeholders from all the corners of the country.’As part of the ongoing basketball transformation with the full support of the Namibian Government and the Namibia Sports Commission, during a recent Zone 6 basketball congress held in Maputo on June 26, Namibia (Claudette Gustavo) was elected to serve on the Zonal Basketball Committee as the new Finance Commissioner. This latest development will see Namibia participating more in the activities of the Zone.
