Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) has confirmed that two suspects are currently on the run, while one is in police custody following a diamond heist on Saturday.
Namdia chief executive Alisa Amupolo on Sunday said a police case involving armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder has been opened.
“The suspects fled with an unspecified number of Namdia’s diamonds, the value of which is still to be determined.
“There were four suspects involved in the robbery. Two suspects are currently on the run. One suspect is in police custody. One suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the incident,” she said.
Amupolo urged Namibians to refrain from spreading false information.
“Namdia is aware of inaccurate reports circulating on social media regarding the recent tragic incident at our premises. These misleading accounts are causing confusion and misinformation. We remain committed to collaborating with the Namibian Police to provide the public with accurate and verified updates,” she said.
The Namibian on Sunday reported that the police have identified the man who was shot at Namdia as protection officer Francis Eiseb (57).
Eiseb was found dead.
The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation has reported that Windhoek Fire Brigade sources say the suspect with the alleged self-inflicted wounds succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
