The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) and TotalEnergies maintain that Namibians are showing up despite recent media reports stating otherwise.
This comes after an article published in The Namibian titled ‘Little interest in TotalEnergies consultations’.
Namcor says: “Namibians are showing up in force to help shape the energy project. Together with TotalEnergies, Impact Oil & Gas, and QatarEnergy, Namcor is thrilled to share an update on the ongoing community participation in the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment roadshow for the proposed Offshore Venus Field development in Block 2913B, located off Namibia’s coast.”
The statement further says over 100 Keetmanshoop residents filled the University of Namibia’s Noordhoek campus, raising
thoughtful questions about environmental protections.
Meanwhile, Bethanie’s Community Hall hosted more than 200 attendees.
“In Lüderitz, over 300 participants joined sessions so lively that some ran hours beyond schedule, with many staying to explore our
interactive project displays,” Namcor says.
They say nearly 600 Namibians attended discussions thus far.
According to Namcor, “it’s important to note that the consultations are at a critical stage of gathering your insights on the project’s potential environmental and social impacts.”
Namcor adds that the contributions will be carefully studied to ensure the Venus Field is developed responsibly, with Namibians and the environment at the forefront.
“A young attendee in Lüderitz asked how the project could support local jobs, sparking a meaningful discussion about training opportunities,” the statement reads
