An inmate escaped from Witvlei Police Station in the Omaheke region on Friday, with the police yet to provide details on the circumstances surrounding the escape.
The police’s head of crime prevention in the region, deputy commissioner Jackson Kamwangha, confirmed the incident and told The Namibian on Friday he was still awaiting a full report from the station commander.
“I can confirm that somebody ran away while being charged,” Kamwangha said.
Kamwangha said he had limited information about the incident and could not yet confirm the identity of the person, the charge he is facing or how the escape happened.
“As to how it happened, I just heard. The other information is to come. The full information. I don’t have much information up to now as to what has transpired,” he said.
He said the station commander had not yet submitted a report detailing the incident.
“I’m still waiting for the full report to tell me what happened,” Kamwangha said.
The incident has raised concern in the Witvlei community, with residents seeking clarity on the whereabouts of the person and whether there is any potential risk to the public.
The police have not yet provided information on whether the person is considered dangerous or whether an operation to locate the escapee is under way.
Kamwangha said further information would be available once the full report had been received.
