The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) board of directors has suspended the company’s managing director, Immanuel Mulunga.
The board chairperson, Jennifer Comalie, confirmed this on Tuesday night.
“I confirm that the MD has been suspended and that more details will be provided tomorrow in a press statement,” she told The Namibian.
Last week, the Namcor board held meetings to discuss possible action against Mulunga, who is accused of making an unauthorised payment of N$100 million for an oil block in Angola.
The oil block payment was meant for a joint venture involving a fast-living German businessman, Lars Windhorst, who is facing several lawsuits from creditors in Europe.
Efforts to get comment from the board and Mulunga were not successful.
The Namibian understands there is fierce ongoing power struggle between Comalie and Mulunga.
Namcor is currently the government’s vehicle in major oil discoveries off the coast of Namibia – including being part of three oil discoveries linked to oil companies Shell, QatarEnergy and Chevron.
