Following their individual success in ‘Dumplin’ (2018) and ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ (2017), Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler unite for their latest Netflix vehicle.
Titled ‘Murder Mystery’ (2019) and a film about the very thing cribbing significantly from Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on The Orient Express’, the action comedy introduces Nick and Audrey Spitz – a middle aged beat cop and his hairdresser wife finally taking their European honeymoon to celebrate their 15th anniversary.
While their budget bus tour awaits, Aniston’s Audrey befriends Luke Evans’ Charles Cavendish mid-flight and he invites the couple to join him in the lap of luxury that is his billionaire uncle’s yacht.
On board, there are a gaggle of eccentric characters – the bitter billionaire uncle, his beautiful young fiancé Suzi, his son Tobey, a self-absorbed actress, a with-it Maharaja, a mute bodyguard and colonel John Ulenga of the Namibian Defence Force, played by John Kani.
As the title suggests, murder ensues and the opportunistic Spitzs are the prime suspects.
Lucky for them, Audrey is a bit of a trashy murder mystery buff and Nick is a failed detective so they have a decent chance of nabbing the real killer before they or the Monte Carlo police catch up with them.
Silly, watchable and with Aniston and Sandler doing what they do best – goofy, gorgeous everywoman and way out of his league schlub – ‘Murder Mystery’ updates a classic story for the stream screen, though the whodunit is underwhelming.
‘Murder Mystery’ (2019) is now streaming on Netflix.
