Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) launched its electronic subscriber identity module (e-SIM) for locals last week.
It allows users to activate mobile services, switch between networks and flexibility when travelling or managing multiple profiles.
Previously, MTC only provided outbound e-SIM services to customers who travel out of the country.
MTC managing director Licky Erastus says the company is on a constant drive to reshape the digital era.
“Namibia is not just adopting global trends but shaping them. And with this launch, we are purposefully advancing our clients into a new era of connecting,” he says.
Minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus says the availability of the e-SIM enhances and accelerates digital inclusion by simplifying access to mobile services.
“This launch also serves as a springboard to support innovation in sectors like internet of things, smart agriculture, smart health, e-commerce and mobile banking,” says Theofelus.
However, there will be challenges such as device compatibility as not all mobile devices currently support the e-SIM which could limit adoption, especially among lower-income users, she says.
She adds that a challenge is consumer awareness because most citizens are unfamiliar with the e-SIM technology and its benefits.
“I urge all digital service operators to ensure inclusion and accessibility to all members of society by doing extensive customer education,” says Theofelus.
