She says her pregnancy has been exciting so far, and it has exposed her to a new depth of love and connection with her unborn baby.
“What makes this journey great is that I am not alone, I have a very supportive partner as well. It obviously makes me more relatable to the people out there and the young women. I have gone through some the challenges, such as the medical costs and the difficulties out there. Once you experience it yourself, you get a different perspective.
“Right now, I believe I am encouraging a lot of women who are going through the journey of motherhood, whether adopting or being an aunt,” she says.
Her experience will certainly influence her in terms of addressing certain issues, and how she uses her voice and influence in parliament to be an advocate for the protection of pregnant women in society.
Mootu would like to address the improvement of laws to protect women from unsafe labour and discrimination during their pregnancy, especially looking at unpaid leave for women during this time.
“A lot of women now feel confident that they can easily approach me and talk about what they are going through. For example, there is a lack of cardiotocography (CTG) machines at the Katutura referral hospital, and that is the machine used to monitor pregnant women in labour, to see complications and to evaluate the risks.
“We see that is not available, with many of these women having to go through that and some even losing their lives, I am told by some medical experts. There are horrible experiences and these are things I pick up along my journey and I feel I need to take it up and voice it up more and see how pregnancy-friendly some sectors are,” she says. – unWrap.online
