Minister Inge Zaamwani delivers keynote at Lüderitz Crayfish Festival fundraising gala

Lüderitz Waterfront Multi-purpose Hall, Lüderitz. 27 March 2026.

Good evening,

It is a great honour to join you this evening at the 2026 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival fundraising gala, an event that is far more than a celebration of our rich marine heritage. As we gather under the theme ‘Harvesting Sustainability, Empowering Communities’, we reaffirm our continued commitment to the sustainable management of our fisheries resources for the benefit and empowerment of all our people.

The Crayfish Festival has, over the years, grown into one of the signature cultural and tourism events on our national calendar. It showcases not only the exceptional seafood for which this town is renowned, but also the creativity of entrepreneurs, artists, fishermen and the hospitality sector. Tonight, we gather to ensure the continued growth of a festival that has brought pride and opportunity to the region.

As minister responsible for fisheries and marine resources, my duty is the sustainable stewardship of our oceans. This extends beyond determining total allowable catches to ensuring that regulations and conservation measures remain relevant. In line with goal 14 of the United Nations sustainable development goals, our approach to developing the blue economy focuses on conservation and the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. Healthy oceans are essential to human existence and life on Earth. At its core, our fisheries management represents an intergenerational commitment to preserve and strengthen what we inherit for future generations.

Namibia is internationally recognised as a leader in responsible marine resource management. However, true success lies in how much value from the blue economy is translated into meaningful employment, value-added products, and shared benefits for communities, particularly those closest to the resources.

Tonight, we support regional leadership and the Lüderitz town council in raising vital funds to host a successful 2026 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival, ensuring it remains world-class, inclusive and impactful. Beyond entertainment, the festival contributes to local economic activity, stimulates tourism, supports small and medium-sized enterprises, and creates seasonal employment for residents of Lüderitz and surrounding areas.

Lüderitz stands at the centre of major global developments, from green hydrogen to anticipated investment decisions in oil and gas. These opportunities signal a transformative future. Yet we must not forget the fisheries sector that built this town. As Namibia strengthens its position in tourism, the blue economy and cultural promotion, events such as this festival play a vital role in showcasing our strengths to local and international audiences.

The world is watching how Namibia balances sustainability with economic opportunity while ensuring that communities remain at the centre of development. They will find a nation united in purpose, transparent in action and committed to protecting its people’s interests. Sustainable development must be shaped from within.

Our marine resources are not only economic assets but also central to Namibia’s food security. For decades, the ocean has fed our people, sustained jobs and supported coastal communities. In line with NDP6 and the SWAPO party manifesto implementation plan, a key national priority is to achieve food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on food imports by 80% by 2029.

The Crayfish Festival raises awareness of the value of crayfish, not only as a source of protein but as a means of supporting livelihoods. I commend the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust and the Lüderitz town council for their dedication. Their perseverance has made this festival a key national event attracting participants from across the country.

I also extend appreciation to Sidney Martin for his leadership and guidance, and to corporate sponsors for recognising the importance of inclusive development and responsible partnership.

The crayfish symbolises resilience, thriving in the cold Atlantic waters. Similarly, the people of Lüderitz have remained resilient, adapting to change and contributing meaningfully to national development.

As we enjoy this evening’s programme, let us give generously in support of a shared vision. Let us invest in community development, preserve our marine heritage and promote sustainable tourism that benefits all.

In closing, I thank everyone who made this evening possible. May our collective efforts ensure that the 2026 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival is the most successful yet. I wish the 19th annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival every success.

I thank you.
