The Ministry of Mines and Energy is tight-lipped regarding an armed robbery at the Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) premises in Windhoek on Saturday.
Deputy mines minister Kornelia Shilunga, when approached by The Namibian to discuss the impact of the heist on the country’s reputation as a leading diamond producer, said Namdia falls under the finance ministry.
“I would not be able to comment on the unfortunate incident, Namdia falls under the finance ministry. I advise that you forward these questions to them.”
This comes after Namibian Police deputy inspector general Elias Mutota confirmed that a Namdia security officer was arrested on Sunday in connection with the armed robbery.
“We believe that the suspect currently detained is a security officer at Namdia and was available on duty when the incident happened,” Mutota said.
The robbery, involving four suspects, took place at the Namdia office on the corner of Sam Nujoma Drive and Dr Nkwame Nkrumah Street in Windhoek.
The incident left Namdia protection officer Francis Eiseb (57) dead, one suspect, identified as Max Endjala, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while a second suspect is in police custody.
