Mbumba urges parliament to remain resilient

President Nangolo Mbumba has urged members of parliament (MPs) to remain resilient and continue safeguarding the laws of the country.

“As I end my political journey, I want to urge you all to protect this parliament and our sovereign laws for the sake of all Namibians,” he said during his final speech on Tuesday.

Mbumba bid farewell to his acting term in parliament, which began after the death of president Hage Geingob in February 2024.

The president expressed confidence that Namibia would consolidate peace, unity, stability and prosperity.

He commended members of parliament on their outstanding foundational work and the pivotal role they played in ensuring the parliament was a pillar of democracy.

Mbumna also urged the parliament to endeavour to fulfill its mandate to channel contrary views that reflect the diversity of voices in the nation.

He said the laws made in parliament are sovereign because MPs are elected to represent the country’s citizens, who are the ultimate sovereigns of a democratic Namibia.

He added that Namibians have entrusted the legislature by freely electing the individuals and political parties of their choice to serve as their representative voices.

Mbumba emphasised the need for parliament to combat racism, tribalism, division and corruption to honour the noble values for many heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives to achieve the independence and nationhood of Namibia.
