Four members of the National Youth Council (NYC) board, including interim executive chairperson Patience Masua, have left office.
Their initial term is supposed to end this month.
Masua confirmed this to The Namibian on Thursday and dismissed suggestions that the members were leaving prematurely, saying their contracts had simply run their course.
“Our term comes to an end on 30 June. We, therefore, will not be continuing,” she said.
She stressed that the decision was not a resignation but the conclusion of their mandate.
According to her, four board members will remain while four have opted to conclude their service with the youth body.
The remaining members are Donna Gamatham, Iyaloo Shiimi, Almandro Jansen and Christine Francisco-Malwa.
“For context, four members will continue. We wish to end our journey with NYC here,” she added.
The members bowing out are Jamie Theron, Unombuiro Kauteza and Ester Shitana.
The outgoing members’ departure comes amid uncertainty surrounding the council’s leadership transition following the postponement of the NYC general assembly at Swakopmund.
Last Sunday, minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp postponed the assembly until further notice after proceedings descended into chaos.
The assembly had been expected to elect new leadership and address key governance matters before it was halted.
The postponement now leaves questions over when the electoral process will resume as the terms of several board members come to an end on 30 June.
