Mass hysteria grips pupils

PUPILS at Otjomuise Project School in Windhoek last week got a big scare following a bout of mass hysteria.

According to the teachers, several pupils started screaming and talking in deep voices shortly after the 10h00 break, while others fainted.

Parents in the area, who came to fetch their children, demanded answers and threatened to take their children to other schools, claiming it was not the first time this had happened.

When The Namibian arrived at the scene, pupils were screaming and running away from the school while a security guard had locked the gate, yelling at them to go home.

According to some of the teachers who declined to be identified, a pupil in one of the classes started throwing desks around and screaming while claiming there was a ghost at the school.

The teachers claimed that the pupil, along with four others, started acting very strangely, jerking uncontrollably, talking in strange voices and laughing, while calling other pupils names.

A group of about 11 parents gathered at the school’s gate, hugging their crying children, some of whom started having attacks again.

“Its not our children; it is the school that houses these evil things that enter our children,” said Justine Gaoses, whose child was also affected.

Johanness Tsamaseb blamed the church, which is known to The Namibian, that holds Sunday services at the school.

“My child never has these attacks at home; something must be wrong here at this school. If it continues I will take my child to another school,” said Tsamaseb, while carrying his child into the school building.

The principal declined to comment and called for a meeting with the parents.
