Namibia on Monday started celebrating Namibian Heritage Week under the theme ‘Okupwika Ovirumatwa Vyombazu Yetu nga Kozonditona Zoruyaveze’ (Preserving Heritage for Future Generations).
In the Otjozondjupa region the celebrations are taking place at the Museum of Namibian Fashion at Otjiwarongo, focusing on protecting the country’s cultural and natural heritage.
Otjozondjupa governor Julius ǁKhamuseb says heritage connects the past, present and future and forms an important part of Namibia’s identity.
“A nation that loses its heritage loses an important part of its identity,” ǁKhamuseb says.
He says the country’s heritage is reflected in its traditions, stories, languages, music, dance, arts, crafts, food and traditional knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
The Heritage Week celebrations, which end on Friday, aim to encourage communities to take pride in their heritage and help preserve it for future generations.
