Mariental are schools’ champs

MARIENTAL High School table tennis players were crowned the champions of the First National Bank inter-schools competition held at Swakopmund recently.

Ten teams of three players each from schools in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Mariental, and Windhoek participated in the competition.Mariental High School, which was represented by Govanny Isaacs, Danville Diergaardt and Romanus Kawyanga, took top honours in the event.The runners-up were Devano Mowes, Jacob Machleidt and Dementrio Mowes of DHPS in Windhoek.The team of Namib High School in Swakopmund settled for third spot and consisted of Frank Winter, Kevin Bauman and Olaf Jacobi.The best player for the tournament was Govanny Beukes (Mariental), who did not lose a single match. He was also the only male athlete chosen to represent Namibia at the Singapore 2010 Friendship Camp where table tennis is one of the core sport codes.According to organiser Sigrid Goebel, the tournament was characterised by great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. She said FNB Namibia had sponsored these events at the coast since 1998 and she thanked the bank for its generous support.The floating trophy and medals were handed over by Debbie Voights, a risk consultant at FNB Namibia. The next schools’ competition will be held at Rehoboth in March next year.The other schools that competed at the Swakopmund event were Westside High School A and B (Swakopmund), Kuisebmond High School A and B (Walvis Bay), Coastal High School (Swakopmund) and the Swakopmund Secondary School.
