Man killed in Windhoek bar shooting

A shooting at a bar and restaurant on Independence Avenue in Windhoek has led to the death of a 35-year-old man.

According to the police, Nande Simon Mulokoshi was shot in the chin at around 21h30 at Chicago’s Bar and Restaurant on Saturday night, killing him instantly.

“The motive behind the shooting is unknown, the suspect was arrested and police investigation continues,” the police stated on Sunday.

Kelvin Kamalata, Chicago’s owner, has confirmed that the entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras.

He reports that Mulokoshi was a regular visitor at the bar. His group appears to have invited the suspect, although an altercation broke out shortly after he arrived.

As the argument escalated, the suspect, along with several others, were escorted out of the bar by bouncers. During this time one of the people he had arrived with became violent and was pepper-sprayed.

It is alleged that the suspect then went to his car to collect a firearm, which the police have confirmed to be a 9mm Taurus pistol.

After shooting two rounds into the air, he walked back towards Chicago’s.

“And then he started shooting randomly and came to the gate,” Kamalata said.

Since the bouncers were blocking him from entering the bar, the suspect began firing through the door. It was one of these shots that struck and killed Mulokoshi.

“He was shooting randomly. He could have hit a lot of people,” Kamalata said.

He added: “It’s quite painful. A lot of our employees were devastated. And now, you know, we’re just looking forward to getting counselling for a lot of young people that were at Chicago’s. Because they saw something that they’ve never seen before.”

While the suspect tried to flee the scene, the police were able to take him into custody and will continue to investigate.
