Man arrested over killing of grandmother, injuring minor

A woman (83) was killed and a boy (4) seriously injured during an alleged attack at Ondiyamande village in the Oshana region on Friday.

The suspect, the woman’s grandson, was arrested on Saturday and is expected to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to the Namibian Police, the incident occurred while the elderly woman and the child were asleep at their home.

National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi on Sunday said the suspect (30) allegedly forced his way into the house before attacking the victims.

“It is alleged that the suspect came home while the deceased and the victim were sleeping. He smashed the room window, gained entry and assaulted the victims,” Shikwambi said in the weekend serious incidents report.

The elderly woman died from injuries sustained during the attack, while the child survived.

The suspect allegedly contacted the deceased’s son by phone after the incident and informed him about the attack, Shikwambi said.

The motive for the assault has not yet been established and police investigations continue, she said.
