• PINEHAS NAKAZIKOAfter an absence from the music industry for quite some time, the visionary musician Makoya has returned to the limelight.
Besides sharing details about his projects and other activities that have kept him busy, such as a full-time job and being a father and a husband, he also spoke about his new music and projects and shed light on his recent divorce from his long-time partner, Noorjehan Green.
Makoya has been in the music industry for more than 20 years, some of them with the Matongo Family musical group.
He took a break from music after the release of his last album, ‘Bly In Jou Baan ‘, in 2015.
Speaking to The Weekender this week, Makoya, real name Strauss Lunyangwe, said over the years he has also been trying to make sure his production house, TS Media, can produce quality television shows, especially.
This includes his recent project ‘MTC HopSol Youth League ‘, which has been running for a year on One Africa Television, in partnership with Collin Benjamin.
NEW RELEASE
“Apart from that, my music has always been about turning heads. I have made it my mission to not always follow a trend but create my lane,” said Makoya, adding that is why he always referred to himself as “the Kanye West of Katima”.
The exciting news is that Makoya will soon release his latest album, titled ‘son of the Soil ‘, which he said is the embodiment of the work he has done in the past and is still going to do in the future.
According to Makoya, ‘son of the Soil ‘ comes straight from the heart and he hopes music fans would love the work he has put into the album. The album consists of 14 songs, with production credits from Mr Glo, DJ Dozza, Arafath, Cox and House Guru Gang.
“There are great songs we have done with DJ Vuyo, Dj Siya, Tuko and Mabuzza, with bonus tracks, including Sunny Boy, Brumeldha, and Tswazis,” Makoya teased.
For now, he has a single out as a foretaste of what to expect on the album. The single is titled ‘Inkosi ‘ and features Deborah and Mr Glo. The song was also chosen as the theme song at the WorldSkills Africa, which took place at Swakopmund recently.
Apart from the album, Makoya says he and his team are also busy with their television football show, which showcases Namibia’s hottest young talent, in a first for Namibian television.
They will also soon launch ‘subu-A ‘, another project in which they will announce in what direction they will be taking the brand.
DIVORCE
Apart from music and other projects, Makoya revealed that he has parted ways with his longtime partner Noorjehan Green, after getting married in 2019.
“I can confirm that we are not together anymore and decided to go our separate ways after many years together,” said Makoya.
“Well, things work out for different reasons. I believe it’s God’s will. We will always respect each other because of the history we have together and a lot of accomplishments we made together and having our beautiful son,” he said.
He said his journey has just started because of the space in which he is creatively, professionally and personally.
“I ‘m happy. Once you ‘re happy that’s when things start falling into place, which I feel is happening to me at the moment.”
For him, this means more doors are now open. “I know I can make somebody very happy. Life gets better with experience as they say, which I have learned.”
