The Landless People’s Movement (LPM) youth command element has demanded urgent government action over the continued leadership crisis at the National Youth Council (NYC).
This comes months after its June general assembly ended in chaos without constituting new leadership.
The party says this in a statement issued on Thursday.
LPM national spokesperson William Minnie says the prolonged uncertainty has left young Namibians without clarity on the council’s leadership, the resumption of its general assembly and the restoration of its governance structures.
The party’s youth wing is backing calls by Affirmative Repositioning students’ command for the minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture, Sanet Steenkamp, to provide a public update on the council’s status and a clear roadmap for resolving the impasse.
“Youth organisations seeking to participate in national youth development processes should not have their activities suspended because of the council’s leadership vacuum,” says Minnie.
He calls for a time-bound plan to resume and conclude the June general assembly and restore legitimate and accountable leadership.
The LPM condemns the disorder and violence that characterised the June gathering, but says those events should not be used to justify prolonging the institutional crisis.
It says NYC must serve all young Namibians through democratic participation, transparency and accountability.
