Ohangwena governor Kadiva Hamutumwa has described the Ndobe-Eenhana road project as a critical driver of regional development, insisting that local contractors must directly benefit from its implementation.
Speaking at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony, Hamutumwa said the road will significantly improve connectivity by enhancing access to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services, while reducing transport costs and stimulating economic activity across the region.
“Road infrastructure is the backbone of socio-economic development. Roads connect people to opportunities, markets and services,” she said.
The governor reminded the main contractor that at least one third of the project value must be subcontracted to local companies, in line with the Ministry of Works and Transport’s empowerment policy.
“We are not apologetic about insisting that our people benefit from development in their own region,” Hamutumwa stressed.
She urged local small and medium enterprises to deliver quality work and meet contractual deadlines, noting that strong performance would position them for future opportunities within the construction sector.
Hamutumwa thanked works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi for officiating at the event and welcomed Roads Authority chief executive Hippy Tjivikua, expressing confidence in strengthened cooperation between national and regional stakeholders.
The Ndobe-Eenhana road project is expected to boost economic activity and improve livelihoods across the Ohangwena region.
