Late war veterans granted state, official funerals

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has granted three stalwarts of the liberation struggle, who recently died, state and an official funerals.

The late Joseph Ndeshipanda Kashea (71), who died on 14 April, was conferred a state funeral, similar to Fillipus ‘Zulu’ ‘Amutenya Nandenga (78), who died on 11 April.

Meanwhile, the late Salomon Frederick Gamatham (68) was given an official funeral.

He died on 12 April.

In a statement today, the Presidency said the decision was on the recommendation of the National Honours Advisory Committee and in terms of Sub-Article (8) of Article 32 of the Namibian Constitution.

The president also proclaimed a one-day period of national mourning, with flags to be flown half-mast tomorrow.

Kashea’s remains will be interred at Ongulumbashe Shrine in the Omusati region on a date to be agreed to by his family.

The late Nandenga’s remains will be interred at Eenhana Memorial Shrine in the Ohangwena region on Saturday.

The remains of the late Gamatham will be interred at the Pionierspark Cemetery in Windhoek on Saturday.

“President Hage G Geingob extends condolences to the wives, children and family of these outstanding Namibians who contributed to the liberation struggle and development of an independent Namibia,” the statement read.
