HE’S established himself as one of Namibia’s most talented hip-hop artists, scoring nods and awards at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) over the years. Just recently, he signed with The Dogg’s record label Mshasho in a lucrative deal.
Now, the rapper intends to shake up the music industry once again thanks to the launch of the new album ‘Price of Ambition’ which he describes as “a story” and “ a musical journey”.
“From track one to 14, you can expect to understand the real price of ambition. That, and a lot more new things sonically. I definitely didn’t stay in my comfort zone on this one,” he said.
In terms of his style with the new album, KP Illest assured those who listen to his music that they will still be able to identify his style, but this time around, delving into a distinct, contemporary sound was the overall goal.
“I don’t think my style has changed as far as writing or delivery goes but I definitely did experiment with some new genres. It’s a part of being ambitious and daring so for me to have called it ‘The Price of Ambition’ and then stay in my comfort zone would be me not living my truth. I hope people like it.”
Known for his unique style and storytelling in his music, KP felt that this album has taught him a few tricks here and there. “I’ve sharpened my skills as a music maker instead of just being a rapper.” And his previous works may have been good, but this album is even better.
“All the mixtapes and the EP were like run ups to take the leap, but they just weren’t there. I used them to explore different things and see what works for me including vocal ranges even though I can’t sing as well.”
Production-wise, KP said he had to take a step back compared to his other projects, but he reassured that he had his say. “Beat selection was a big factor for this project. I barely produced anything myself.”
His works involved a lot more personal information about himself when it comes to relationships and all, but in ‘Price of Ambition’, KP doesn’t only tell his side of the story, but those of the people around him as well. It’s about “the daily lives of people following their dreams and what they go through. Believe it or not, I went out and spoke to and interviewed a few people who I believe are paying the price of ambition.”
But that’s not all.
“Not everything on this album is about me. Sometimes I’m reflecting on what they told me or showed me because it fits so well with the story. It’s a letter from me, not only about me, to everyone out there who is doing the ambition thing.”
The album’s launch will take place at the end of the month, but keep a look out on KP’s social media platforms to find out more details about where and when to find the album.
