||Khamuseb cautions against misuse of government resources

Otjozondjupa governor John ||Khamuseb on Monday warned public servants against the misuse of government resources, saying the wastage of water and electricity as well as poor maintenance are placing an unnecessary financial burden on the state.

||Khamuseb, during his state of the region address at a special meeting of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council at Otjiwarongo, said it was unacceptable that government institutions often leave taps running while lights remain switched on unnecessarily, resulting in high utility bills for government offices.

Such wastage, he said, has been observed at several settlement offices administered by the Otjozondjupa Regional Council.

He stressed that the misuse of government resources, coupled with poor maintenance of government infrastructure and the non-payment of municipal service accounts by consumers, has contributed to the Namibia Water Corporation disconnecting water supplies to the settlements of Kalkfeld, Coblenz, Okondjatu, Okandjira, Okamatapati, Okatjoruu, Gam and Tsumkwe.

Kombat was the only settlement spared from water disconnections this year.

“I, therefore, direct that immediate measures be implemented to enforce strict control of water and electricity usage, as well as the timely payment of these bills,” ||Khamuseb said.

The governor called for the introduction of routine maintenance programmes across all government facilities, particularly at settlement offices under the regional council.
