Katima-Linyanti tar road open

THE Roads Authority on Friday celebrated the opening of a 10-km tarred section of the R125 road linking Katima Mulilo to Linyanti.

It also served as the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the project, during which the remaining 195 km will be tarred in the coming years. The Minister of Works and Transport, Helmut Angula, said the improvement of road networks and communication infrastructure would soon “lead to the integration of cultures, beliefs and perceptions, thereby overcoming tribalism and self-hate, and enhancing the value placed on each other’s cultures.”Innocent Mahoto, spokesperson for Mafwe Chief George Simasiku Mamili, stressed the importance of the road, particularly in the development of the agricultural and tourism sectors, and appealed to local communities to render the necessary support in the building of the road.Mahoto urged the Government to complete the tarring of the road, saying: “We do not wish to see the situation of the Katima-Linyanti pipeline that has come to a standstill for the past two years.”Caprivi Governor Leonard Mwilima also called for the hasty completion of the remaining stretch of road.Erastus Ikela, CEO of the Roads Authority, said the RA would continue improving the existing gravel road to make it safer until it could be tarred.
