Kangweru headman travels with football team to coast

WINDHOEK – Kangweru village headman, Laurentius Mashika will be travelling with Kavango East Second Division outfit Kangweru Black Tops Football Club (FC) for their match against Eleven Arrows in Walvis Bay on Saturday.

The match is part of the 2015 Bidvest Namibia Cup Round of 16.

Kangweru beat Mighty Gunners on penalties after drawing one-all in their Round of 32 match to qualify for the next round of the competition.

“When we travelled to Tsumeb to play against Gunners our headman came with us and we won. He is also excited, just like the players, and we are all confident the players will surprise a lot of people and put smiles on the Kangweru community’s faces plus the people of the Kavango East Region with our win,” said the team’s public relations’ officer (PRO) Michael Kampota.

He told Nampa on Thursday that the players are motivated to play Arrows at their home ground despite the difference in weather conditions that they might face.

“In the Kavango regions we have hot weather, but at the moment we want to repeat what we did in Tsumeb when we played another Premier League side Mighty Gunners. None of our players have ever played in Walvis Bay before and are excited to travel there and surprise our opponents in the field of play,” said Kampota.

Kangweru is situated 120 kilometres east of Rundu.

Kangweru Black Tops FC play in the Kavango East Second Division stream called the Kavhundu League.

Other fixtures of the Round of 16 to be played in Walvis Bay and Windhoek are:

African Stars (defending champions) vs NamPol Omaheke

Young Chiefs vs Touch & Go

Swakopmund FC vs Citizens

Java-Java vs Orlando Pirates

Black Africa vs Rebels FC

Tigers vs Julinho Sporting

Blue Waters vs Unam

The quarter-finals are set for the weekend of 27 to 29 March, with the semi-finals scheduled for 24 to 26 April.

The final will be contested on 30 May at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Meanwhile, one football fan and a partner stand a chance to see an England-based team of their choice play against Sunderland FC in that country.

The all-expenses-paid trip includes watching training sessions of Bidvest-sponsored Sunderland FC, as well as meeting their players. – Nampa
