Newly elected Kamanjab constituency councillor Nikodemus Amutenya last week helped facilitate jobs for people with disabilities, building a resource school in the Kunene region.

He says securing jobs for young people in the region and his constituency is part of his vision.

People with disabilities were recruited for the project last Wednesday and commenced work yesterday.

“In the party manifesto we made a commitment to provide jobs and to heed the call of president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who always preaches inclusivity for all, and inclusivity means everyone.

“This is not it. We are still busy with more initiatives which we will be announcing soon, but the commencement of the school is dedicated to serving children with disablities,” Amutenya said yesterday.

He said once the project has been completed, it will accommodate about 500 pupils from the region and across the country, thereby opening doors to inclusivity and quality education.

The project, called the August 26 project, is already making a difference locally with over 80% of the workforce involved being young and middle-aged Kamanjab residents, Amutenya said.

“These are promising steps towards both the social and economic upliftment of the region. I have also held successful discussions with Standard Bank’s branch manager about the possibility of bringing a bank to Kamanjab,” he said.

Amutenya said the council has secured land for recreational purpsoses in collaboration with Outjo’s local authority.

August 26 project manager John Horaseb says the initiative has employed about 100 people – 30 women and 70 men.

“We have employed three people with disabilities – one woman and two men. What inspired us is that we are adhering to the head of state’s statement that inclusivity should play a role.

“We need to show the nation that being disabled is not being unable. Everyone is capable in one way or another,” he says.
