Iyambo back on the job

ERONGO Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Iyam-bo is back in his office after being suspended for about three years because of his involvement in a car accident in September 2005.

Iyambo faced several charges, which included reckless driving, failing to ascertain injuries and damages during the accident, and failing to assist at the accident scene.
He was also charged with using a Police vehicle without permission and defeating the course of justice.
On the evening of September 25 2005, Iyambo was driving a Police vehicle when he collided with a taxi in Walvis Bay’s main street. No one was injured.
After a long trial in the Swakopmund Regional Court, Magistrate Dinah Usiku found Iyambo guilty of negligent driving and failing to ascertain damages and injuries. He was sentenced to a fine of N$3 900 or 13 months’ imprisonment. Iyambo paid the fine.
He was acquitted on the charges of driving a Police car without permission and obstructing the course of justice, with Magistrate Usiku finding that no proper investigations were done to prove these charges.
The Police chief in the Erongo Region, Commissioner Festus Shilongo, told The Namibian earlier this month that the Inspector General had decided that Iyambo should resume his duties.
