International fishing in the Okavango

The Crockango Angling Club is once again hosting the Annual Crockango Angling Bonanza.

This is the largest freshwater angling competition in Namibia and takes place on the Kavango River from April 30 to May 3, 2008. Teams enter from all over Namibia as well as from Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia. This has become one of the more prestigious events on the southern African angling calendar. The event will be screened on Supersport on DSTV and a feature will appear in the Stywelyne / Tightlines magazine. This year’s event will be hosted by Farm Shankara, which is situated about 90 km east of Rundu.Accommodation is available in the form of campsites with sufficient electricity and ablution facilities. There will be a beer tent with live entertainment every night of the competition. The Namibian band B4 will keep the crowd entertained. There are also activities planned for the children and moms who remain on the banks during the day. However, the fishing is the main attraction.Teams are invited to enter early as space is limited to 60 boats only.Teams can comprise of 1 to 3 members per boat. The competition will be species based and teams will be expected to catch three specimens of the four required species. There is also an individual prize for the largest fish caught as per the points / factor system. The winner of this prize gets a complete fishing rig comprising a boat, engine and trailer to the value of more than N$120 000.This rig was sponsored by Aliboats (Botswana) and Yamaha (South Africa).Last year’s prize went to Duppie Du Plessis who is a member of the Namibian Artlure Angling Team when he caught a modest nembwe (bream) measuring 2,06 kgs on the first day of the competition. The team prize was won by Wato GT.The team comprised of Stefan Pretorius, Gert Pretorius and Fanie van der Westhuizen. They won Engel Freezers worth more N$15 000 sponsored by Cymot, who remain one of the key sponsors for this year’s event. The total value of the prizes exceeds N$200 000 making this the richest angling competition in Namibia.Other major contributors to this competition include: Kea Campers, Powerline Africa, Solly’s Anglers Corner, Namibian Breweries, FNB, Bank Windhoek, Liquor and Tobacco World, Omashare Hotel, Ongombe Safaris, Leisureland, Ndjovhu Hardware, Formula Couriers, Teltron Namibia, Blue Marine, Multichoice Namibia, Sony and many more.On the sports development front, there is also a free competition for locals to enter. They can fish off watos or mukoros (dug-out canoes) and weigh in their catches.Cash prizes are up for grabs for these traditional anglers. It also educates them on the destructiveness of net fishing and showcases the value of eco-tourism to their communities. The presence of Supersport at this event is significant to the development of the sport in the region as it epitomises the pinnacles that can be achieved even for people from such a small and distant community like Rundu. In fact, three members of the Namibian Artlure Angling Team hail from Rundu. The broadcast on Supersport is also invaluable to tourism in the Kavango Region as it will be shown throughout Africa. This will make a positive impact on the economy of the region, not only during the competition, but over a period of time as more and more people are attracted to the beauty of the region and its wild and natural splendor. For
