JULIUS Indongo will fight Terence Crawford in a super lightweight unification title fight in Lincoln, Nebraska on 19 August, Top Rank Promotions announced on Thursday evening.
Major boxing websites like fightnights.com and boxingscene.com broke the news, adding that the fight forms part of a deal between Top Rank and ESPN, which will also partner to broadcast the fight between WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko and Miguel Marriaga in Los Angeles on 5 August.
The Crawford-Indongo fight will be a unification fight for the super lightweight title, since Crawford holds the WBO and WBC world titles and Indongo the WBA and IBF world titles.
It will be history in the making since it will be the first time that the super lightweight title will be unified and only the fourth time in the modern era that a unification title fight will take place.
The previous three unification title fights all involved the American middleweight legend Bernard Hopkins. He beat Oscar de la Hoya in September 2004 to unify the middleweight titles, and successfully defended the titles against Howard Eastman in February 2005, before losing to Jermain Taylor five months later.
The Crawford vs Indongo fight will take place at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, which is about an hour’s drive from Crawford’s home town of Omaha.
The Crawford-Indongo fight will be one of the highlights on the international boxing calendar this year, with both boxers still unbeaten and at the peak of their powers.
Crawford has a record of 31 wins and 22 knockouts, while Indongo has a record of 22 wins and 11 knockouts.
Indongo’s promoter Nestor Tobias did not want to comment on the news, saying he would make an official announcement later.
“We will do a professional and proper job of communicating with the media when the time is right. We haven’t made any announcement yet, its them talking (the Crawford camp), not us,” he said.
