Residents along Kunene River urged to evacuate as flood risk escalates

Residents living in low-lying areas along the Kunene River are being urged to evacuate immediately as rising water levels threaten severe flooding downstream of Ruacana.

The Namibia Power Corporation, in a statement issued on Friday, announced that it will open a second floodgate at the Ruacana Power Station to manage the surging volumes, a move expected to sharply increase river flow to over 1 800 cubic metres per second.

The utility urges residents to move livestock and equipment to higher ground and to stay clear of the riverbanks.

“Lodges and campsites in the area are also advised to take note of the flood warning and to make all necessary arrangements to ensure their and their visitors’ safety,” the utility says.

Residents and visitors are also urged to keep away from the river’s edge and to avoid all activities near the water.
