Independence Museum put on hold

ALTHOUGH Government decided to construct a Independence Memorial Museum more than three years ago, it is unlikely to become a reality soon.

Minister of Works, Transport and Communication Joel Kaapanda informed the National Assembly on Friday that there was simply no money to get this project off the ground. Minister of Youth, Sport, National Service and Culture John Mutorwa appeared unhappy that this project would not be realised in this financial year and wanted to know from Kaapanda exactly when Namibians could expect the project to gain momentum. But Kaapanda had no definitive answer for him, other than to say there were simply no funds for it.”I don’t see any improvement in the next two years to realise this project,” said Kaapanda. The Independence Memorial Museum would be a national monument intended to educate Namibians and tourists about the history of the country’s Independence through historical displays. In this year’s budget allocation to the Department of Works, only N$10 000 is allocated to this project.Minister of Youth, Sport, National Service and Culture John Mutorwa appeared unhappy that this project would not be realised in this financial year and wanted to know from Kaapanda exactly when Namibians could expect the project to gain momentum. In this year’s budget allocation to the Department of Works, only N$10 000 is allocated to this project.
