The MR44, also known as the Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway, is officially open to the public in its upgraded dual-carriage freeway form. The road was officially declared open by president Nangolo Mbumba on Friday.
The Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway, formerly colloquially referred to as ‘the road behind Dune 7’ spans 42 kilometers between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. This road is a key link between the two coastal towns, enabling job creation and economic growth.
Mbumba highlighted his hope that this road would continue to bring honour to Pohamba’s legacy.
“President Pohamba’s heroic exploits in pursuit of the liberation of Namibia and her people are forever etched in the fabric of our democracy. Indeed, the road he took towards freedom remains a great source of inspiration to many of us,” he said.
He added that the project was completed under the mandate of making a meaningful contribution to the local community, with N$150 million spent on local suppliers and approximately 650 jobs created during its construction.
“In conclusion, the completion of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway marks a significant achievement in our pursuit of economic growth and regional integration,” Mbumba stated.
Phase 2 of the project will see the extension of the dual-carriageway to the Walvis Bay traffic circle. This portion is already well underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
