Helao Nafidi in the Ohangwena region has scaled back spending on its annual expo to prioritise essential projects as the town awaits the approval of its N$82-million budget.
Mayor Darius Shaalukeni yesterday told The Namibian the council has put forward a budget exceeding N$82 million for the 2025/26 financial year, awaiting the approval of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.
He said: “The town derives its revenue mainly from water (N$23 million), assessment rates (N$14 million), electricity surcharges and dividends (over N$1 million), refuse removal (over N$4 million), interest from investments (N$424 643) and sewerage services (over N$2.7 million).”
The town council spent N$24.5 million on salaries, wages, and allowances, N$30.9 million on general operations, and N$7.1 million on repairs and maintenance, the mayor said.
It is therefore currently running on a budget shortfall of about N$17.4 million.
On Saturday, the mayor said the shortage of funds has led to the town council reducing its funding for the expo, redirecting funds to pressing projects.
“We have cut funds for the expo this year, because we need to complete the installation of street lights from Engela Hospital towards Omafo for the well-being of the people, as well as to finish the town’s soccer pitch,” he said.
The mayor said the budget is designed to enhance development and service delivery at the town.
Minister of urban and rural development James Sankwasa has called on residents to ensure the timely payment of municipal services.
This appeal was conveyed by his deputy, Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele, during the gala dinner. Sankwasa highlighted the town’s strategic location along the Angolan and Namibian borders, emphasising its potential as a gateway for regional trade and a hub of cultural unity.
“Development is multisectoral, which means that progress and positive change in any aspect of society requires collaboration and integrated strategies across various sectors.
“Residents of Helao Nafidi, it is your ultimate responsibility to honour your respective municipal services on time to assist the council in reinvesting in the development of the town,” he said.
