THE Namibia Wild Horses Foundation (NWHF) has revealed that the wild horse in the Gurab area will remain in the custodianship of the environment ministry as state property.
This was contained in a statement issued by the foundation on Friday about the plight of the horses that have been suffering from the drought and predation from the hyenas.
“NWHF welcomes the action MET has taken in drawing up an action plan for the Garub horses as crisis management decision have proven to be detrimental to other species, especially the resident hyena,” reads the statement.
The environment ministry sent out a draft management plan to stakeholders about the future management of the Garub horses, to which the foundation had given feedback and awaits the ministry’s final decision.
The statement added that while there remains evidence of hyena activities in the area, predation on the horses has not occurred since February this year.
Earlier this year, reported that NWHF raised concerns over the predation of wild horses in the Garub area of the southern Namib by a pack of spotted hyenas.
Foundation added in the statement that the wild horses of the Namib have been in a harsh condition for the past five years.
