Griquas comfortably beat the Welwitschias

THE Welwitschias put up a plucky fight but in the end the Griquas ran out comfortable 61-24 victors in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge match in Windhoek on Saturday afternoon.

The Welwitschias were still in the game trailing 19-10 at half time, but they were reduced to 14 men after a rather harsh yellow card to winger JC Greyling and Griquas capitalised with two tries in his absence to go 33-10 ahead.

The Welwitschias tried gamely to get back into the match and after two fine tries by flanker Thomasau Forbes and fullback Chrysander Botha, they managed to reduce the deficit to 40-24.

Griquas, however, finished stronger, scoring three tries in the last 10 minutes to win by a canter.

The result leaves Griquas at the top of the North group with three wins from three on 15 points, while the Welwitschias remain bottom without a point.

The points:

Griquas scored 9 tries through Anthony Basson, Godfrey Ramaboea, Wilmar Arnoldi, Anthonie Volmink, Michal Haznar, Sias Koen, Gideon van der Merwe and a penalty try.

Tinus de Beer added three conversions and George Whitehead four conversions.

The Welwitschias scored three tries through Darryl de la Harpe, Thomasau Forbes and Chrysander Botha while Cliven Loubser added three conversions and a penalty.
