Govt trims funding for marginalised students

MARGINALISED students will in the near future have to apply for government study loans, with the announcement that, only ten students will be funded per region as of next year. This was said in a press statement issued this afternoon by executive director in the Office of the Vice President, Abraham Iilonga.

Students from marginalised communities such as Ovatue, Ovatjimba and San, have been funded under the education support programme, which now falls under the Office of the Vice President’s marginalised community division, since 2005.

Various complains have been made by the beneficiaries, who at most never received their allowances on time while some claimed that students from communities that were not marginalised would also benefit.

“We would like to inform that, the education support programme will only cater for ten beneficiaries per region as new intakes for the 2020 academic year to ensure effective implementation of this programme. Next year, the selection programme is restricted to marginalised learners who are currently in Grade 12 and on our education support programme for the 2019 academic year,” said Iilonga.

He added that other qualifying students from the marginalised communities are encouraged to apply for financial assistance from the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund and other funding institutions.
